Caption: ‘The waterfront timbers were removed after detailed recording both on plans and by elevation drawings. Slices of  the timbers were taken to provide dating information through the science of dendrochronology (tree-ring dating)

Caption: ‘Working conditions under the vaults of the railway viaduct were at times very difficult. The problems of  excavating under artificial lighting were compounded by fumes from various machines, rising ground water and complex shoring requirements.’
